The Planning Phase of Video
Great. You know you need a video and you know exactly what kind of video you need to make. You know about how much it will cost and how long it will take. What’s the missing step between here and there – between dreaming and doing? It’s the planning phase…and it’s reeeeeeeally important.
You need a plan for your video…
No one can deny that there is a difference between having a plan and not having a plan in anything in life, including creating a video. Even a “LIVE” video needs at least two minutes of preparation: “What are you going to say? What will they see? Does it matter? Will they care? How long will it be?” and the list goes on. If you put even a little effort into planning a Facebook Live or Instagram Live video…how much more so should you put time and effort into planning a produced video that you want to keep on your website for years?
…and it doesn’t have to be complicated…
Yes, we can show up with a camera and ask who’s available for interviewing and what’s available for b-roll, and then we can take all that footage back and find something that’s decent and create a video from it. Yes, it’s possible to go from phone call inquiry to hitting record in 24 hours if need be…and in some cases it might be necessary. But that shouldn’t be the norm.
…but more is more.
There’s a lot of decisions that need to be made throughout the process of making a video, and the more of these decisions we can make in pre-production the less “I hope this works” moments we have on set. We can show up and hope for the best or we can plan as much of those things ahead of time and know that we’re filming the right people about the right topics and capturing the right footage to complement the right message to achieve the right goal. This is where scripting and using a teleprompter are huge in better crafting your message. The more we can clarify expectations, communicate what you want, and plan ahead, the better your video will perform and the happier you’ll be with it.
